It was July 20th, 1907 at 6 AM when 800 employees from the Pere Marquette Railroad prepared to board a train for a picnic in Detroit. At 9:13 AM the excursion train, going 50 miles per hour, rounded the bend in the track (in Northland Township) and ran head on into a freight train. The collision, killing 28 people, remains one of the worst train crashes in Michigan history. What happened and why will be described. An inquiry revealed surprising reasons for the crash. our presenter Joseph Oldenburg, is an archivist at the Burton Historical Collection and a former instructor in Michigan History at Oakland Community College.
